Aglianico, a historic grape dating to the seventh century BC, is prized by winemakers for its concentrated, vibrant, black fruit. One of the best kept secrets of its native Italy, Aglianico enjoys the sunshine of the Campania and Basilicata regions of Southern Italy. Seghesio Family Vineyards farms a small amount of this Noble varietal on the hillside of our Sisters vineyard on the Home Ranch in Alexander Valley. There, the warm, sun-filled days parallel that of its home in Italy.
HOME RANCH VINEYARD
Long, warm days aided by the absence of marine influence marks this site. The soils are composed of clay and clay loam with underlying layers of basalt, sandstone and serpentine rock. Vines are challenged by the low nutrient level of the clay and the shallow topsoil, both which force them to produce more concentrated fruit.
